Reading

Intent Statement:

 

It is our intent at Brindle Gregson Lane Primary School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in English that will teach pupils to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively.

With regards to Reading, phonics will be emphasised in the early teaching of reading to beginners when they start school and throughout Key Stage 1.

We intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, to gain knowledge across the curriculum and develop their comprehension skills. It is our intention to ensure that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education and to instill a lifelong love of reading.

 

Implementation:

 

At Brindle Gregson Lane Primary School reading is an important part of all children’s learning and progress.

The school uses Phonics readers (Pearson’s Bug Club) in Reception Class and Year 1 and this is supplemented with a range of other schemes which are used from Year 1 upwards. This means that all children have the opportunity to read a wide variety of books in a structured, challenging and progressive approach. All books are colour banded and this ensures appropriate challenge is provided for all children. Children also enhance their reading through visiting our school library once a week and loaning books which are taken home. The reading scheme/library across school is constantly evolving as we utilise money from Book Fairs and the PTFA to buy additional books to supplement these and as a result children are provided with books that not only challenge but also interest them and encourage a love of reading.

 

Phonics, is an important daily lesson in each class from Reception through to Year 2 (and of course for those children who need this extra Phonics intervention throughout Key Stage 2). The school follows the government ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme which develops the children’s ability to hear, discriminate, recognise and write the sounds. The New Curriculum also supports children’s phonic development and we are working in line with the curriculum content provided. Phonic work is combined with the school’s structured reading scheme to develop reading skills. Every year in June, the Year One pupils take the National Phonic Screening check. The children are expected to reach a benchmark level.  Our parents are excellent at supporting the school phonics and reading homework. The children take reading books home daily to practise, improve and enjoy and we appreciate this support enormously.  These reading books are changed twice a week through Key Stage 1 and on at least a weekly basis throughout Key Stage 2.

 

Every class in school has a daily ‘reading for pleasure’ session where class novels are shared.  We also have a poetry spine in place.  Children throughout Key Stag 1 learn a poem a week with Reception Class having poetry journals which are taken home.  Throughout Key Stage 2 poems are shared on a daily basis with a different focus author/theme for each half-term.

 

Impact:

 

Formative  Assessment

Teachers question, observe, discuss and/or mark the children’s English work according to the school’s marking policy.

A record of books read from the individual reading scheme is kept.  We use running records in order to assess whether a child is ready to move onto the next book band (after the children have moved off Phonics readers).  These are completed as a minimum on a half-termly basis.

A record of all guided reading material used are kept and each class a Guided Reading file including the LAPS (Learning and Progression Steps) group reading grids.

We use Lancashire KLIPS (Key Learning Indicators for Performance for Reading and Writing).  These are key learning statements which:-

  • support teachers’ planning to address gaps in learning;
  • help teachers focus on where pupils/groups of pupils are in their learning;
  • guide teachers’ judgements as to whether pupils are on track to meet year group expectations and how much progress is being made over time

 

Summative  Assessment

These will be held once a term during assessment weeks and will take the form of:-

  • End of Key Stage SAT tests in Y2 and Y6 in Reading, Writing and Spelling
  • Pearson Reading tests in Y1, Y2 (Autumn and Spring term only), Y3, Y4 and Y5.
  • Grammar and Spelling tests in Years 1-5.
  • An Independent writing assessment piece is completed during the termly assessment week in children’s ‘Wow’ writing books.
  • Termly assessment and tracking of phonics progress in Reception and Key Stage 1.  More rigorous assessment of Phonics is kept for those children working in a ‘catch up’ programme.
