Welcome to the wonderful world of Reception Class. The Reception teaching team is Miss Macdonald and Miss Weall. Here is some information about the way we teach and why:
EYFS Curriculum Intent
Our EYFS curriculum aims to provide opportunities for our children to develop as independent, confident, successful learners with high aspirations who know how to make a positive contribution to their community and wider society.
Our goal is to ensure that all children are happy and engaged.
We aim to provide an environment that allows each child to display high levels of concentration, creativity, energy and persistence.
We believe that children need opportunities to initiate ideas and activities so that they develop the learning characteristics that will support lifelong learning.
Through the EYFS curriculum that we provide the children continually demonstrate their ability to:

We hope that all children will be inspired and motivated to actively participate in the curriculum; experiencing enjoyment and transitioning into Key Stage 1 with the confidence and character to meet the challenges of an ever changing world.
In the EYFS we follow the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum’ document. The children’s learning experiences are planned to enable them to develop and achieve in the early learning areas through play and investigative learning experiences. The EYFS curriculum is planned for the inside and outside classrooms and equal importance is given to learning in both areas. The curriculum is planned in a cross-curricular way to enable all aspects of the children’s development.
We are child led when it comes to deciding upon a topic choosing themes that the children themselves show an enthusiasm and fascination in. These topics are book led using quality texts as a starting point for planning learning across all areas. We provide a balance between child-initiated and teacher led activities throughout our provision. We believe in enhancing our provision in order to provide children with the opportunities to practice and embed skills taught during direct teaching times.
The characteristics of effective learning are viewed as an integral part of all areas of learning. The children’s Physical Development experiences are enriched through some specialist sessions led by outside coaching teams.
We measure impact through assessing the children using ages and stages to track progress throughout the year and then against the Early Learning Goals at the end of the year. We carry out observations of the children which are uploded onto Seesaw which is an app we use as an online learning journal. We value parent/carer contributions to learning journeys and parents/carers are able to upload photos and videos to Seesaw to share with us special moments from home. We also sometimes carry out more formal practical assessments for Maths.
Learning is currently a little different in Reception Class due to the global pandemic. We are using a mix of prerecorded videos and live teaching sessions in order to deliver our EYFS curriculum to the children who are working from home. We also use an app called Seesaw which enables great two way communication between home and school.
We are using an online reading scheme called 'Bug Club' to ensure that we can carry on our reading during this lockdown. This is a phonics reading scheme which also has quizzes at the end of each book to check the children's understanding. Miss Macdonald is also sharing stories with us daily on Seesaw. We love to read in Reception Class and developing a love of reading underpins everything we do.
